Revisiting Japan …..

By Sarmishtha Sarkar

The visit to Japan was one of my most memorable trips! Apart from dancing in one of Tokyo’s foremost theaters and other big cities like Osaka and Kyoto, we also got an opportunity to travel to the smaller towns and perform for small audiences. The best part was being able to stay in a small town with a family and become a part of their daily routine! And the other remarkable feature of this trip was being able to mingle with the cast and crew of Peter Brooke’s famous theatrical production Mahabharata! I was indeed lucky! The pictures speak a lot about my experiences…

Sutra – Connecting thread…

It has been 10 years since we moved to USA and  we have moved to 6 different states. Before moving I was pretty busy with my life as a dance teacher and performer.But after moving here in United states I am on a visa which doesn’t allow me to work. As soon as I settled down in my first apartment I found out the library and asked them if they are interested in doing any Indian Cultural program. I told them I wouldn’t charge anything 🙂  Continue reading “Sutra – Connecting thread…”

Problem = Solutions …..

When it came to dressing up I was so finicky. Anyone who has been around me at that time knew I would start crying for a sing pin sticking out. But I was blessed by having people around me who would work hard so no pin is sticking out 🙂 My mom, dad and uncle all of them were at work before Garba ninght or an Annual dance show. And my dad’s best friend Ashwin Tapodhan who is a professional make up artist, who specialized in Bhrathanatyam dress up in those days would dress me for every single Annual show. So from my first ever performance at 5 or 6 years of I was dressing like I am getting ready for my Arangetram .

Then came days when I started to perform more than once a year and my uncle started getting busy. So I had to got to the beauty parlor to get ready for the show. And ……. yes I cried through the evening.

That my mom said she had enough of my crying. I have to learn my own make up and hair if I want to keep performing. So my uncle put together a make up kit for me to learn. During the  whole summer vacation of seventh grade I did my make up and hair almost everyday. Right around that time I came in touch with Sarmishtha Didi ( whole another story ) and she gave me encouragement to learn hair and make up too. 023

And this is where I reached in few years. I also started doing make up of younger students and my friends for the performances in order to practice more. All of the people around me always pushed me to the new limits and taught me that there is no way to stop at the problem. Look around and you will have a solution.

The Stage and Us

Some glimpses from the recent presentation ” Kshetram” – The Sacred Space. This was a piece inspired by its literal meaning in Hindu mythology, where it is referred to as the physical holy location where a temple or a collection of temples, and deities exist.
Therefore is an invocation to different deities, seeking their blessings.
This production has been choreographed as one long piece, one prayer following another.
Thanks to my dancer friend Jyoti Venkatachalam and my long chats with her, which led to this final production! I used every single dancer in my dance shool in this production!

In July 2017, we all got an opportunity to perform in Chicago for Nights Out in The Parks with Ishti.  This was after 7 years that all 4 of us were in the same space.  All four of us had performed together last, nearly 2 decades ago in Poland while touring with Setu Folk Dance Group.
